Occupational Therapy and Sensory Integration Therapy

Occupational therapy is provided for children who show particular difficulties with their fine motor skills, perceptual skills and pencil control.

The occupational therapist wants to ensure that a child is ready for school, and assessment and therapy, therefore, are focused on the tasks required to be able to write, such as having good hand function, finger dexterity, control of a pencil and the ability to draw and understand the concepts involved in forming letters or numbers.

In addition, sensory integration therapy is also provided by an occupational therapist. This is based in the Therapy room, using large equipment and different sensory tools to develop the child's sense of balance, touch or general body awareness. It also develops a child's co-ordination skills by working on developing posture and muscle strength. The occupational therapists work individually with children as well as with groups.

Many of the groups are carried out in the classroom together with the class team, but with the emphasis on developing fine motor and drawing skills. Where appropriate, contact is made with parents and suggestions for activities to be done at home are given.  Parents are always welcome to contact the Occupational Therapists if they have any concerns about their child.
