Governors

Message from Chair of Governors
The Governing Body is responsible for the conduct and effective management of the school, acting within the framework set out by the Government Legislation and by the policies of the Local Authority.

Battledown Centre for Children & Families is at the forefront of developments in early year’s provision in teaching and learning and outreach expertise showing other mainstream Centres and specialist based provision the way forward.

I see the Governing Body as very much a supporting and focussed group of professional and caring volunteers who are committed to the young children and families that attend Battledown Centre. We are also committed to the Headteacher and Teachers and Staff working with us to provide a caring and happy environment for every child attending the Centre and every adult working with us.

If any Parent or member of staff wishes to contact us please leave a message with the School reception.

Dates for Full Governing Body Meetings

Governing Body
Governors are responsible for ensuring the National Curriculum is taught in accordance with current legislation. They are responsible for the recruitment of staff, for the use of the building, and for prudent financial management of the school.

Governors meetings are held twice each term and a number of committees meet in between to deal with specific issues of school life.
Minutes of meetings are available to view as public record, please contact the school office to make a request.  Thank you

Types of Governor
Staff Governors, Parent Governors, Local Authority Governors and Community Governors.

Staff Governors (other than the Headteacher) are elected by the school staff and must be paid to work at the school. At least one staff governor must be a teacher, and if there are three or more staff governors, at least one must be a member of the support staff.

Parent Governors can either be elected by parents of children at the school, or if insufficient numbers are elected, can be appointed by the governing body to fill any remaining vacancies.

Local Authority Governors are essentially allocated to the school via the Local Authority (LA). A person wishing to become an LA governor would submit an application to the LA. The LA would then search for an appropriate school and appoint them, once agreement has been sort from the existing governing body.

Community Governors typically work and live near to the school. They bring a different dimension to the school and are able to use both their business and local knowledge to help the school. As a Special School one of the Governors is nominated by the named charity associated with the school.

Clerk to the Governors – The governors are supported in their work by a clerk to the governing body. The clerk is usually considered an integral part of the governing body, although they are not entitled to vote. The clerk’s role is one of providing advice and interpretation on the regulatory and administrative framework in which governor’s work, preparing and distributing minutes and agendas, keeping records and dealing with correspondence.

Contacting the Governors – If you have any reason to speak to a Governor, or wish to apply for any vacant positions (if applicable), please make contact via the clerk of the governors via the school office.
